NEWS
TO KNOW
Take
note of these recent developments in the management and
nonprofit world, and take advantage of resources now available
to your organization:
1.
NY State Charities Bureau Releases Fundraisers Report
The
New York State Charities Bureau has posted its latest report on
fundraisers in New York. According to the report, "charities
retained an average of 31.5 % of the funds raised by
telemarketers registered to solicit contributions in New York in
2000. Some of the charities received much less than that and
some received nothing at all."
LAPA
believes that this report is important because it demonstrates a
continuing trend of poor returns produced from phone
solicitation. Such information can be invaluable in strategizing
about the kinds of fundraising activities you choose.
Read
more about the report at:
http://www.oag.state.ny.us/charities/pennies01/penintro.html.
2.
Wise Giving Alliance
The
Better Business Bureau and the National Charities Information
Bureau have formed the BBB
Wise Giving Alliance to evaluate several hundred national
nonprofits in relation to the provisions of the CBBB
Standards for Charitable Solicitation. They have created a
BBB Wise Giving guide, available for free at http://www.give.org.
If
you are not currently registered with the Better Business
Bureau, you might want to consider applying for inclusion in
their directory. BBB recognition validates your organization’s
high standards of conduct and provides a valuable reference for
donors, many of whom check to see if you are registered as part
of their grant reviews.

GuideStar Now Offering Detailed Analysis of Public Charities
GuideStar,
the national
database of nonprofit organizations, announced the release of
GuideStar Analyst Reports, a new tool for examining the
activities of nonprofit organizations. Based on official IRS
data, GuideStar Analyst Reports are available for approximately
150,000 of the nation's public charities. A spokesperson for the
Williamsburg, Virginia-based organization stated that the
reports present the most complete, accurate, and current
financial information available on these nonprofit
organizations. Additionally,
GuideStar has added sections with nonprofit and donor
resources, including tips for online fundraising, wise giving,
nonprofit classifieds, and articles on the nonprofit world.
Read more about it at http://www.guidestar.org.
Many
nonprofits unfortunately do not take advantage of updating their
GuideStar profile, a free feature. We suggest that you update
your profile so that it conveys the most accurate portrait of
who you are and what you do.
All of LAPA’s clients have this done automatically upon
contracting.

Annual Reports:
There’s No Escaping It
The New York State
Attorney General’s Charities Bureau requires charitable
organizations that solicit contributions from New York residents
to file an annual report together with the payment of a filing
fee every year. To note, filing must occur within six months of
the fiscal year closing (normally by June 30). Filing Fees can
range from $10 to $1500 depending on the size of the
organization. Those organizations with assets between $1 million
and $10 million are subject to a $250 fee.
Have you… or are you
planning to file your annual report? LAPA can develop an
annual report for your organization and help you file it with
the Charities Bureau, using strategies that have proven to cut
costs by more than 50%.
(One example of a cost cutting strategy is to use our
customized template that allows you three years of use for just
one year of costs!)
In
addition to complying with State regulations, annual reports serve
to educate stakeholders in your organization, particularly
donors, about your activities.
