G.A.I.T.
G.A.I.T. stands for Genuine Alternatives in Therapy, an appropriate acronym for an innovative, compassionate therapeutic riding center serving people with developmental delays and disabilities, and physical disabilities. Clients range from children to adults and gain a new perspective on themselves by sitting astride gentle horses led by trained volunteers. The easy, rhythmic walk of horses specially selected for the program communicates with the rider in a subtle way that leads to physical and behavioral improvement and progress. G.A.I.T. has also pioneered “equine-facilitated learning” for troubled children and youths; young clients approach a new understanding of their own difficulties through guided interaction with horses and observation of their behavior. Seeking to increase and diversify its revenue stream, G.A.I.T. turned to LAPA for a feasibility study of fundraising options and prospects. For more information, please see www.gaitpa.com.

Village Care of New York
Village Care of New York (VCNY) is more than a nonprofit organization, it is an expression of the best part of Greenwich Village. In the late 1970s, the owners of the Village Nursing Home on West 12th Street suddenly closed the home because it was losing money. The woman immortalized by her nephew, Patrick Dennis, as “Auntie Mame” was one of scores of long-time Villagers about to be displaced. Members of the community raised funds to purchase and renovate the building and stepped in to save the home. When the AIDS epidemic swept the city, Village Care of New York expanded its services to create day-care, home-care, and a separate nursing home expressly for people living with AIDS —the first models in the nation for all three types of care for people with HIV/AIDS. VCNY continues to reflect the creative and humanitarian spirit of Greenwich Village. LAPA designed an individual donor program for VCNY, conducted a strategic assessment of potential foundation prospects and corporate sponsors, and consulted on campaign strategy. For more information, please see www.villagecare.org.

Camp Speers Eljabar YMCA
Camp Speers-Eljabar was founded in 1948 to provide the first inter-racial overnight camp in the YMCA system. From 1948 -1969, the camp operated as an entity of the Central Atlantic Area Council of YMCAs to serve associations that had no camp of their own, to provide low-cost camping, and to offer interracial camping experiences. In March 1969, the administrative committee set in motion a process to make the organization an independent YMCA. What began as a summer-only camp has grown to a year-round program serving close to 10,000 children and families each year. The mission of Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA (CSEY) is to build spirit, mind, and body through a unique combination of Summer Camp, Outdoor Education, and Conference and Local Community Programs. CSEY remains true to its founding spirit by promoting diversity across the racial, religious, and socio-economic lines that divide many communities today. LAPA provided campaign services to CSEY for a $5M campaign entitled The Campaign For Everycamper. For more information, please see www.campspeersymca.org.

The Youth Outreach Program has established a safe and arts-oriented alternative on Saturday evenings for LGBTQ youth, ages 13-21, who are at risk of HIV, drug use, and prostitution. LAPA raised more than $200,000 annually for these programs through grants and individual giving. Additionally, LAPA restructured and outsourced the Church’s data-base management. "When Family Services of Westchester wanted to develop our intergenerational social model elder day care programs, we turned to LAPA after interviewing many consultants. We ended up working together for more than ten years and all of our half-dozen elderly services programs are so much stronger because of LAPA's technical expertise. I would work with them again without reservation."
— Tom Sanders, Family Services of Westchester
